Recreation, Amusement Are Must For Healthy Life

The Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) banned Hindi movies and music back in 1998 as a part of their strategy in the liberation movement. All the theatres in the State were forced to shut down following the ban imposed by the outfit. The primary aim of the outfit was to keep the people at bay from Indianisation. Cinema halls were totally paralyzed and many became jobless.

With the development of Manipuri digital film industry, the theatres have started to revive gradually in the last 6-7 years as the people are in the habit of watching Manipuri films. However, during that time when Bollywood movies were showing in the theatres, the number of cinema goers was very large. In the case of English film, authorities of Indian Film Board at Mumbai took a simultaneous decision to stop supplying of English film in the State after the ban on Hindi film. Asha cinema, Jina cinema and Mini Friends showed particularly English films. Today’s young generation may not know where these theatres were actually situated. The Mini Friend’s at Paona Bazar is now has turned into a shopping mall and the Asha cinema and Jina cinema at North AOC have been displaced by a school (R.K. Sanatombi Vidyalaya).

In Manipur, we have very limited entertainment and recreational centers. As human development progress, our lifestyles also change. Upto the last 20-30 years some indoor games like Khutlokpi Shannaba, Chagai Chongbi, Churut-Upu Shannaba, Cheitek Kotpi and Marble Shannaba were popular in the State. These games were mostly played with materials found in nature such as rocks, sticks and clay. The above games are forgotten ones except marble and now children usually demand fun toys and games. There are educational toys and games for children. Educational toys for school age children often contain a puzzle, a problem-solving technique, or mathematical proposition.

In ancient Greece and ancient Rome, children played with dolls made of wax or terracotta, sticks, bows and arrows, and yoyos. When Greek children, especially girls, came of age it was customary for them to sacrifice the toys of their childhood to the gods. On the eve of their wedding, young girls around fourteen would offer their dolls in a temple as a rite of passage into adulthood. One of the oldest and most universal of human toys is doll. In Manipur, children used to bury discarded old dolls just beneath the earth where banana trees grown in the backyard of a house.

Psychologists say toys and play in general, are important when it comes to growing up and learning about the world around us. The young use toys and play to discover their identity, help their bodies grow strong, learn cause and effect, explore relationships, and practice skills they will need as adults.

Most of the toy manufacturers in India are from the unorganized sector. But Mattel Toys, Funskool and Legs are three of the major international players in the Indian toy industry. Indian toys and games can be classified as fun or educational toys. Toys and games available in India include soft toys, computer games, dolls, electronic games, etc. Indian toy industry today faces stiff competition from toy manufacturers in China or Chinese toys. Chinese toys are available at a fraction of the cost of Indian toys.

Not toys are appropriate for all ages of children. Some toys which are marketed for a specific age range can even harm the development of children in that range. However, green or eco-friendly means several things: that it has the least possible impact on the environment, in production as well as the disposal and that is devoid of harmful chemicals and additives which are hard for people as well as the environment, we need to look for the best selling eco-friendly toys.

We have some parks in the State where limited number of guests visit only on special day. As these parks are not theme parks or amusement parks families go there often less. A theme park is an amusement park organized round a unifying idea. Amusement parks provide everything you need to be a child again. For instance, the Universal Studios Hollywood is a full-fledged theme park. Disneyland Park is also a theme park located in Anaheim, California, owned and operated by the Walt Disney Parks and resorts division of the Walt Disney Company. Mickey’s Toontown is based on a 1930s cartoon aesthetic and is ‘home to Disney’s most popular cartoon characters. We do not always enjoy or satisfy with what we have at our home, but we look for something beyond that which can entertain us more. It seems majority of us have chosen TV or computer as the only source of entertainment. We need amusement parks, various toys and games and sports to have fun and laughter that rejuvenate life.
