A Good Friday Message

For the Son of Man (Jesus Christ) came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10)

In his immeasurable love for humanity, Lord Jesus Christ took upon himself such titles as “Son of God”, “Son of Man”, “Lamb of God”, “Light of the World” etc describing His mission and His actual object in life. By calling Himself the Son of man Jesus Christ expresses how much he loves humanity. He identifies himself as one of human beings.

In Mark 10:45 Jesus Christ said of himself “For the Son of man came not to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many”. His main aim and object was to serve humanity by giving his body as a ransom to redeem humanity from sins and eternal death. It pained him to the core that the souls of all unsaved and unransomed mortal human beings shall be cast into eternal hell fire by Almighty God, the horrifying and terrific unquenchable fire that eternally burns with sulphur and brimstone.

“The lost” here means human race descended from the first man Adam who gave in to Satan’s temptation and disobeyed God and broke his command not to eat of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve, the first man & woman were, therefore, expelled by God from Eden garden and the Eden duo lost contact and fellowship with God then and there.

Thereafter, Adam and his descendants, in other words all human race, have been termed as lost in the sight of God. The Bible says “Since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). Defiance of God’s commands is sin; it is sin which renders us unworthy of God’s glory. God created man immortal but due to commission of sin man is rendered mortal. Disbelief and disobedience of God’s words is such a grievous sin that human race is doomed to eternal punishments in hell unless someone, anointed by God, redeems us.

Now a lost man is a missing man who does not know the way back to his house or father. He does not know where he is and where he is heading to. Unless sought and found, he will ever remain lost and dead. Such is exactly the desperate situation in which we have fallen due to disbelief on God. Humanity needs desperately a seeker or a savior. You and I are one of the lost. As soon as we die, our souls are sure to be cast into hell. We utterly need someone, some superman to seek us and rescue us. But unless one has deep love for the lost, how can he seek us for in seeking us the seeker has to suffer untold miseries, and risk his life for us. Love alone can embolden and commission such seeker and a savior.

But, Alas! No man, no king, no gods and goddesses have such a selfless love to seek us and save us, except God-man Jesus Christ who, full of love and compassion, came to seek out and save us by offering himself on the cross, being crucified on the cross on Mount Calvary in AD 31, during the governorship of Pilate who found no crime in Jesus Christ but for fear of outbreak of a riot, gave him to the Jews for crucifixion just to pacify the mob.

Lord Jesus Christ bore all the sins of humanity though sinless and perfectly holy He is, in His love for human race, He laid the sins of mankind on Himself and counted Himself worthy of death penalty or capital punishment as our substitute. Thus He suffered the chastisement or the trauma of crucifixion, being nailed to the rugged wooden cross, hand and leg, the piercing of the side. Using the chief priests and Roman soldiers, God, the Father punished his beloved Son Jesus Christ, bearer of our sins to death. You and I should have been crucified by God for our sins and crimes had not Christ substituted us. Thank God, His son Jesus Christ suffered all punishment that we should have suffered. How poignantly agonizing & inspiring is the death of Jesus Christ! His immense love for humanity was exhibited in action. His blood speaks the unspeakable love. About 800 years before Jesus was crucified, the prophet Isaiah, moved by the Spirit of God, said about the Jesus Christ.

“Surely he has borne our grief

And carried our sorrows;

Yet we esteemed Him stricken

Smitten by God and afflicted

But He was wounded for our transgressions

He was bruised for our iniquities;

Upon him was the chastisement that

Made us whole and with his stripes

We are healed. (Isaiah 53:4-5)

Yes, Jesus died so that we may live eternally; He was poor so that we may be rich. Jews rejected him so that His kingdom may come upon us. He bore humiliation so that we may be glorified.

In order to make the picture clearer, let me cite one incident. George Washington, the first President of USA, it is said, had a son whose close friend one day felled an ornamental tree planted by the President in his compound. Washington felt angry and asked who cut down the tree and the guilty boy said “It was 1.” Washington brandished a stick and started flogging his son’s friend.

On hearing the cry of the boy, Washington’s son quickly ran and pushed away his friend, and offered himself to be beaten severely as a substitute of his friend saying “It is my fault, Daddy, beat me to death.” “Not the fault of my friend”. The father Washington beat his son severely till his fury subsided.

That deep is the love Jesus had for all humanity. He bore our sins and suffered the punishment for our sins and forgave his tormentors. He gave up His spirit at about 3 pm in the afternoon, was buried in the new tomb on Friday and He rose again from the tomb on Sunday morning, on the third day from the day of crucifixion as foretold by Jesus himself (Luke 18:33). Jesus says “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). The resurrection of Jesus is the culmination of God’s redemptive work and fulfillment of all prophecies in the Holy Scriptures about Jesus, the Messiah and the Savior.

May God bless the message.
