‘Insurgency and Economic Development in North East India‘ is a compendium of 19 well-researched papers on the focus area of insurgency and economic development in North East India and related themes. The papers were presented at a national seminar on the same topic at the Sibsagar College, Joysagar some time back. Contribution of a panel of authorities drawn from the diverse fields of administration, economics, journalism, history, education and other social sciences ‘“ like Sri H. N. Das, Dr. Jayanta Madhab, Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta, Sri Nitin Gokhale, Sri Sunil Nath, Dr B. N. Borthakur, Dr Rajib Handique et al ‘“ have made this compilation a good reference work. The Introduction titled ‘˜Insurgency Situation in the North East’ by Sri J. P. Rajkhowa, former Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, is a curtain-raiser to the issue in question in the true sense as it gives the reader valuable insight into the vexed problem of insurgency in the North East India, starting with the Naga rebellion in the mid-fifties of the last century.
Coupled with economic backwardness, ethnic unrest and a deep feeling of alienation have also acted as contributory factors of insurgency in this part of India. Although the insurgency problem in North East India has been a baffling problem eluding solution for over half a century, it is felt that no concerted and systematic attempt has been made to understand the problem in its true perspective. The present volume is a systematic, coherent, well-coordinated and exhaustive treatment of the insurgency problem in the region, which tries to trace the origin of insurgency problem in North East to the Treaty of Yandaboo and then traverses across the entire gamut of social, political, administrative, economic and historical factors that were responsible for the same. It first attempts to understand the problem of insurgency and then tries to find a lasting solution to the problem.
Published in a compact, well laid-out book form with a meaningful cover, this present volume is a treasure trove of valuable and relevant facts and information about the insurgency problem in North East India. The editor, Paramananda Sonowal, a lecturer in the department of Education of the Sibsagar College, deserves kudos for bringing out this useful, must-keep collection for the students, teachers, research scholars, policy makers as well as the common readers.
