IMPHAL, Mar 15: Out of two reported drug abusers arrested by Assam Rifles along with drugs and who were subsequently remanded to police custody, one succumbed to an illness at the hospital.

A police source said that Md Nawaj Sharif alias Sirajur Rehman (30) of Haoreibi Sambrukhong died at RIMS at about 10.20 pm yesterday.

He was brought to RIMS by Lilong police personnel following complaints of illness.

Nawaj Sharif and Md Mujibur (24) of his locality were handed over to Lilong police station by 28 Assam Rifles in the wee hours of March 14.

The duo was arrested by troops of 28 AR from Lilong Masjid Lamkhai in the night of March 13.

Quoting a report furnished by 28 AR, the source informed that 1163 numbers of SP capsules, 43 cartons of Nitrosun-10 tablets and nine mobile phone handsets were seized from Nawaj and Mujibur.

It was reported that both of them were drug abusers besides peddling drugs to help them financially.

On the other hand, taking strong exception to the circumstances leading to the death of Nawaj Sharif, a large number of people took out a protest rally from Lilong Lou Manga to Lilong Bazar today where a public meeting was held. The meeting resolved to form a joint action committee. As the crowd tried to storm Lilong police station in the afternoon, police fired tear gas shells and mock bombs to drive back the advancing crowd.

The JAC has been demanding befitting punishment for all those involved in the death of Nawaj as well as commensurate compensation to the bereaved family and a suitable Government job to a member of the family.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of India has strongly condemned the death of Md Nawaj Sharif alias Sirajur Rehman.

According to a press release issued by the party,   Md Sirajur Rehman was subjected to severe torture by troops of 28 AR before he was handed over to police in the morning of March 14.

Demanding that befitting punishment should be awarded to all those responsible for the death of Sirajur, the party also conveyed solidarity to the bereaved family.  It further pledged moral and physical support to any course of action that may be taken up by the JAC in connection with the death of Sirajur.
