Workshop On Crops Concludes

IMPHAL, Feb 16: The Valedictory function of the three-day National Seminar cum Workshop on Developing the Potential of underutilized Horticultural crops of Hill Regions’ was held today at Classic Hotel, North AOC.

The workshop was conducted under the joint aegis of ICAR Research Complex for North East Hill Region, Umiam (Meghalaya) and ICAR Research Manipur centre.

Among others the valedictory function was attended by Member ASRB, New Delhi Dr NK Tyagi as the chief guest, and former DDG Horticulture ICAR (New Delhi) Dr SP Ghosh, Joint Director (ICAR Manipur Centre) Dr N Prakash, NSAPUHCHR Co-organizing Secretary Dr SS Roy and NSAPUHCHR convener Dr IM Singh as the guests of honor. The seminar cum workshop was reportedly participated by about 200 scientists, NGO workers and progressive farmers from different parts of India.

At the workshop deliberation was centered around underutilized horticultural crops and on their incorporation into the farming systems as well as natural resource management. Emphasis was also given on commercialization, production of quality plant and planting materials, improved packaging and nutrient profiling of horticultural crops in addition to promotion of value added products like herbal plants/medicines.

Speakers at the occasion also focused on global climate change and highlighted importance on biodiversity conservation. In his address during the valedictory function, Dr SP Ghosh called upon the participants to identify underutilized plants in order to convert them to cultivable crops and develop cultural practices.

He also noted that the seminar has brought about many positives particularly concrete recommendation and suggestion which Dr Ghosh opined will definitely benefit the farming community.
