UKHRUL, Apr 11:  Several Tangkhul frontal organizations have unanimously denounced the vocal demand raised by the Phungyar District Demand Committee terming it as an immature political gimmick.

The decision of the Tangkhul civil society organizations comes close on the heels of the United Naga Council openly opposing the move to create a separate district for Phungyar Assembly Constituency. The MLA of Phungyar Assembly Constituency, which comprises four sub-divisions, Wungnaoshang Keishing has been at the forefront in demanding the creation of the proposed district and the Chief Minister is understood to have assured a team from Phungyar, that the Government is studying the matter at hand.

A press release signed by frontal organizations including the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), Tangkhul Katamnao Shaklong (TK-S), Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL/ Tangkhul Youth Council), Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL) and Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long (TNWL) said that they fully support the United Naga Council’s (UNC) objection to Phungyar District Demand Committee and its direction for withdrawal of the representation submitted to the Government of Manipur for creation of Phungyar District by bifurcating Ukhrul district.

Observing that at such a juncture, when people’s movement against the alleged suppressive policy of the State Government of Manipur is at the pinnacle, the frontal organizations rued that a devilish policy to divide the conjugal cord of the same tribe was being framed for meeting certain political mileage of some unscrupulous so called leaders.

Irrespective of how big the size of Phungyar Assembly Constituency might be, it is not the right time to place such a demand before the alleged anti-people Government of Manipur.

Moreover, it is not the wishes of the people but definitely the handiwork of vested few individuals to sabotage the present common issue of the Naga people of Manipur.

Stating that they remain united on the issue and hence, declared that they would unanimously support the UNC’s stand against the proposed creation of Phungyar District. They further appealed to all concerned to desist from being a party to such an anti-people move in the backdrop of the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) and its declaration of severing all political ties with the Government of Manipur.  “Rather it is time we surge  forward in unity to achieve not only the goal of an area but the goal of all the Nagas vis-a-vis the Alternative Arrangement  spear- headed by the UNC”,  the release added.
