IMPHAL, Mar 10: The ongoing 40 hours general strike called by the MPLF in protest against President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil’s visit to Manipur seriously affected normal life in the State today.

However, there is no report of any violent or untoward incident so far.

The MPLF urged the people to boycott the Indian President during her two day visit to the State asserting that the Manipuri people have nothing to expect from the President’s visit.

Except threats, harassments and atrocities, Manipuri people have not received anything from India in the last 60 years, the MPLF alleged.

It called a general strike with effect from March 9 midnight till 4 pm of March 11.

On the first day of the general strike today, there were very few activities in most commercial centers including Khwairamband Keithel. All schools and colleges were closed. Banks as well as oil pumps remained shut even as Government offices        recorded very low attendance.

However, CBSE exam went on uninterrupted.

All inter-district passenger carriers remained off the roads though some private vehicles could be seen on the roads.

On the other hand, the State Government took up extra security measures in view of the MPLF’s general strike.

The MPLF alleged that the Indian President’s visit is aimed at hoodwinking the international community that Manipur is a part of India and also to consolidate the alien rule over Manipur.

No Indian leaders have ears to listen to the people’s voice that they do not want to live under the alien rule and that they want to be independent.
