State Media Woes Aired

NEW DELHI, Dec 27: An explicit account of the problems and difficulties being encountered by media fraternity in Manipur was presented before a sitting of the South Asian Media Com-mission here by commission member and Editor of the Ireibak daily Irengbam Arun.

The sitting held today at India International Centre Annexe was presided by the commission’s president KK Katyal.

The commission first took up the issue of Radia Tapes and its implications on the professional ethics of journalism which has become a major current issue in the country.

The next agenda was the problems and difficulties being faced by journalist fraternity in the North East region and Jammu and Kashmir.

It was during this session that Irengbam Arun explained in detail about the problems being faced by journalists in the State which emanated both from State and non-State actors.

He also narrated about the situation he experienced in the aftermath of the publication of Guwahati based Teresa Rehman’s report about the July 23 Khwairamband killings in Tehelka magazine.

Bureau chief of the Hindu Shujat Bhukhari presented detailed account of the situation being encountered by journalists in Jam- mu and Kashmir.

Today’s sitting was also attended by former Editor of the Statesman S Nihal Singh, Editor of the Jansatta Om Thanvi, former BBC Bureau Chief Satish Jacob and president of the South Asian Free Media Association Vinod Sharma. The sitting resolved to strengthen the commission and to send its teams to Manipur and Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, it is reported that the 10th foundation day of the South Asian Free Media Association would be held tomorrow at Constitution Club at Rafi Marg here together with a seminar.
