IMPHAL, Mar 24: Youth Affairs and Sports Minister N Biren’s son shot dead a student at Ghari along Airport Road at about 2.45 pm of March 20.

Irom Roger (21) of Wangkhei Angom Leikai was travelling in a car (i-20, MN-01W/7482) towards Imphal airport when he was shot by some four/five persons who were coming in a Bolero jeep (MN-03P/2417) in the same direction, informed a police source.

Roger who was driving the car was hit on the right side of neck. He succumbed enroute to hospital.

In connection with the murder, Minister Biren’s son Nongthombam Ajay (27) and four other persons were arrested by the police in the night of the same day.

The other four arrested by police have been identified as Thongbam Anilkumar (27) s/o late Ashaykumar of Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai, Bachaspatimayum Roshnikumar (29) s/o Rajbihari of Brahmapur Thangapat Mapal, Puyam Sidhartha (26) s/o Biren of Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai and Seram Raj (27) s/o Nabakumar of Nagamapal Seram Leikai.

Police have also seized one M-20 pistols, one magazine of the same pistol, six live rounds, one gun license issued in Ajay’s name and one jeep (Bolero Storm VLX) from his possession.

Moreover, one black armless jacket and a T-shirt of dark grey color reportedly worn by Ajay on the day of committing the crime have been recovered by police.

The car (i-20) driven by Roger has also been seized.

The police seizure list also includes a blood stained round neck T-shirt of grey color.

All the five accused were produced before the Court of CJM Imphal West on March 6 and they were remanded to police custody for six days.

An FIR case has been registered against them at Singjamei police station and they have been charged under Section 302/34 of IPC and Section 27 of the Arms Act.

On the other hand, a JAC (joint action committee) was constituted against the murder and the same JAC had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Okram Ibobi on March 21 demanding that capital punishment be awarded to Minister Biren’s son Ajay.

The other points of the memorandum were revocation of all gun licenses issued to youngsters and removal of Minister Biren from his post for his failure to rein in his own son.

Late Roger was doing graduation at Bangalore. His father Lokendro is an LDC at YAS Department. Roger and his elder sister were the only two children of Lokendro.

The corpse of Roger was handed over to the bereaved family after post mortem at RIMS on March 22.

Meanwhile, Roger’s mother Chitra Devi has pointed out certain mistakes in the news reports published in some national papers about the murder of his son.

Quoting news reports published in The Tribune and The Deccan Herald on March 22 as saying that Ajay and Roger had personal animosity, Chitra has debunked the same reports as baseless.
