RIMS Nursing College Runs Into MU Test

IMPHAL, Mar 5: Consequent upon recruitment of unqualified teaching staff in RIMS College of Nursing, Manipur University is refusing to conduct examinations for the college.

A reliable source in RIMS said that careers of 38 nursing students including from other Northeastern States studying in the college are in serious jeopardy as MU is refusing to conduct examinations for them.

For RIMS College of Nursing, advertisement for direct recruitment of one Associate Professor, five Lecturers and 14 tutors was issued on December 17, 2009.

According to the advertisement, the requisite qualification for the Associate Professor was MSc Nursing and 10 years teaching experience. In case of unavailability of qualified candidates, candidates with five years teaching experience might do, it said.

For Lecturers post, the requisite qualification was Masters Degree in Nursing and three years teaching experience. For the post of tutors, the candidates should be either MSc Nursing or BSc Nursing with five years teaching experience.

Even as advertisement for recruitment of Associate Professor, Lecturers and Tutors was issued based on the recruitment rules, many employees of RIMS who did not fulfill the requisite qualifications were recruited.

The then RIMS Director issued an order on June 17, 2009 whereby RIMS Deputy Nursing Superintendent Th Chinglembi was appointed as Professor cum Principal of the nursing college, M Vijayentimala as Professor cum Vice-Principal and Y Sundari as Associate Professor.

Further, another order was issued whereby 10 RIMS employees holding BSc Nursing degree were appointed as Tutors or Clinical Instructors.

The then RIMS Director flouted all recruitment rules by appointing RIMS employees whereas the recruitment advertisement specified that it should be direct recruitment. Moreover, all the appointees starting from the Principal to Tutors or Clinical Instructors did not have any teaching experience.

RIMS College of Nursing should be affiliated to Manipur University and for this; all documents should be produced to show that all the teaching staff starting from the Principal have the requisite qualifications.

However, as all the staff are unqualified, the necessary documents could not be furnished. Subsequently, MU refused to grant affiliation to the College of Nursing, conveyed the source.

Even as the maiden session for the College of Nursing commenced in March last year, MU has been refusing to conduct examinations for the college on the ground that the existing teaching staff are unqualified.

With MU refusing to conduct exams, RIMS authorities are considering to affiliate the college to Assam Nursing College as a last ditched effort to save career of the students, added the source.

The real problem with RIMS nursing college is not with the authority but it due to the Litigation hungry Professor like Dr.Nabachandra, HOD of Dentistry, who filed a case in Hon’ble Gauhati High court, Imphal bench in collusion with the then Med. Superintent. Now as a consequence, the precious academic career of 38 students is at risks of losing years. Moreover, no new students were admitted in 2010-11 session. Wake up dear citizens of Manipur, it’s time we called spade a spade.Dr.Nabachandra, HOD, dentisrty should be held responsible for the whole mess.
