Rail Fed Oil Depot, Inland Waterway, State On The Move, Inland Waterway Survey Kick Starts

IMPHAL, Mar 2: To study the feasibility of opening an inland waterway on Barak River from Tipaimukh to Jiribam and from Jiribam to Lakhimpur, a survey work has started from today.

According to an official source in the State Transport Department, the Inland Waterway Authority of India (IWAI) has entrusted Rail India Technical Evaluation Services (RITES) to conduct the survey and study the feasibility of opening an inland waterway on Tipaimukh. Subsequently, RITES granted the contract of the survey work to Larson and Toubro Pvt Ltd, whose officials started the survey from Lakhimpur today.

The survey which began from today would cover the portion from Lakhimpur to Jiribam.

For survey work, which is to study the feasibility of opening an inland waterway covering a total distance of 80 kms ( 80 kms from Tipaimukh to Jiribam and another 10 kms from Jiribam to Lakhimpur), no security would be required till the Jiribam portion.

However for the portion from Jiribam to Tipaimukh which covers a distance of 80 kms, RITES has written to the State Transport Dept for arranging necessary security.

Accordingly, the Transport Dept has brought up the matter to the notice of the State Govt.
