Police Foil Attempt To Gherao Assembly

IMPHAL, Mar 15: About 50 members of All Manipur DPC Faced Candidates’ Association for Primary Teachers 2006, who tried to highlight their plight in the ongoing Assembly session were foiled by a police team, even though a delegation were allowed to proceed to hand over a memorandum.

In the backdrop of the recent announcement by the Government to appoint 1413 candidates on contract basis out of the total of 3000 who had appeared in the DPC for selection of primary teachers in 2006, some of the agitated Association members moved along the Kanglapat Road enroute to the Assembly.

However, a police team barricaded their path before allowing a handful of them to submit the memorandum to the Chief Minister.

Interacting with news-persons, Association president Th Subash voiced strong resentment at the decision of the Govt to appoint 1413 candidates on contract basis inspite of the fact that the DPC result is yet to be declared officially.

Pointing out that names of the 1413 candidates had been published in a State daily even before declaration of the DPC result, Subash insisted that the appointment should be solely based on merit and not otherwise.

In the memorandum reportedly handed over to the Chief Minister, the Association expressed surprise that a list of 1413 candidates of primary teachers was published in the said daily without the approval of the Government against which the Association submitted a number of representations to authorities concerned for official publication of the DPC result.

He further pointed out that on June 30, 2010 the then Education Minister released a statement that the said list of candidates published in the newspaper four days earlier is ‘not an official one and therefore the same will not be enforced’.

Posing as to why the enquiry committee constituted by the State Government to examine result of the DPC is yet to come out with an explicit explanation on the matter, Subash cautioned that the Association will not tolerate such unfair conduct of the Government.

Suggesting that the Chief Minister understand plight and sentiment of all the DPC faced candidates and strong concrete remedial measures including revision of the decision to engage some of the candidates on contract basis, Subhash cautioned that any delay to initiate corrective measures would constraint the Association members to launch strong agitation against the Government.
