Of Rs 300 Crores Sanctioned, Only Rs 62 Crores Released Till Date, BRO DG Inspects NH-53

IMPHAL, Mar 4: Director General of Border Roads Organization (BRO) Lt Gen Ravi Shankar today assessed the work progress on National Highway-53.

Apart from the road inspection, the DG also called on the State’s Chief Secretary and reportedly in- formed the latter that the Centre has released Rs 62 crores of the sanctioned Rs 300 crores only for NH-53 development till date.

An official source confided that the DG made both aerial surveys of the ongoing activities along the Highway as well as spot inspection at various points of the ImphalJiribam route.

His meeting with the Chief Secretary was also attended by Principal Secretary (Works) Ram Muivah and other officials.

It is informed that Lt Gen Shankar assured the Chief Secretary to complete preparation of the 222 kilometer long route to the best possible extent before onset of monsoon season while conceding that black-topping of the entire stretch would be impossible within the year.

The DG also reportedly disclosed to the Chief Secretary that the Union Government (Ministry concerned) has released an amount of Rs 62 crores out of the total allocation of Rs 300 crores in the three year period.

The DG is also scheduled to visit Moreh and Ukhrul district in a helicopter, tomorrow. The Transporters’ and Drivers’ Council had recently accused the BRO of being lax on NH-53.
