IMPHAL, Jan 10: A 15-day long National workshop on ‘˜Curative conservation on illustrated and paper manuscripts’ has began from today at Manipur State Archives, Keishampat here.

Being organized under the joint aegis of Manipur State Archives, Manuscripts Conservation Centre, Imphal and National Mission for Manuscripts, Department of Culture, Government of India, New Delhi, retired principal of Government Law College, Manipur Padmashree RK Jhalajit inaugurated the workshop as chief guest.

Former Director of CDC, Manipur University Dr Y Mohendro and member of Manuscripts Conservation Partnership Centre (MCPC), Imphal East Angomcha Wangkhem Ibochou Meitei were also present at the occasion as functional president and guest of honor respectively.

Delivering the key note address, Director of Art and Culture Dr K Sorojini observed that it has been the responsibility of the Manipur State Archives to collect, preserve and conserve the old Manipuri manuscripts and it should be the duty of the present generation to ensure proper utilization of these manuscripts that have the footprints of the history of Manipur for the benefit of the generations to come.

During the 15-day long, many experts would be imparting knowledge on curative conservation of illustrated and paper manuscripts, she explained.

In his address as chief guest of the inaugural function, Padmashree RK Jhalajit pointed out that manuscripts are treasure trove and they should be conserved properly.

Just as Manipuri dance and sports introduced Manipur to the world today, Manipuri manuscripts help us in understanding the past. So, the efforts being made by the Government of India towards conservation of Manipuri manuscripts for the benefit of future generation is appreciable, he said.
