IMPHAL, Jan 27: The annual Puya Meithaba observance organized by Meitei National Front (MNF), Kangleipak was held today with the Front hosting the 282 anniversary of the event at Citizens’ Club, Wangkhei Khunou ground.

Puya Meithaba is an event when a non-local scholar lured/misled the ruler of the erstwhile independent Manipur (formerly Kangleipak) to seize and burn copies of the sacred Puya, a compilation by scholars and priests regarding the traditional beliefs, socio-political policies and guidelines on economic sustenance for the nation.

As a part of the observance the Maichou Ningshing Mana (award) was conferred to Atom Baiga (Kongchai) of Sorok Atingbi Khuningtek, Jiribam and the ‘˜Chingmee Tamee Nungshi Khudol Mana’ to Ws Peshung of Nungpan village under Chakpikarong sub-division by the titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba.

The observance was supposed to be held yesterday at Kangla but owing to strike call by armed outfits against the republic Day celebration it was deferred by a day.

Nevertheless, a symbolic observance was conducted at the historic Kangla yesterday with a few scholars and priests participating in it.

Presenting the key-note address, secretary (women affairs) of MNF Laishram ongbi Nongmaileima stated that in remembrance of Puya Meithaba which took place in 1729 the Front had been observing the event every year since 1978.

Burning of the sacred Puya not only led to gradual downfall of the then sovereign status but also strained relationships between the hill and valley dwellers, she added.

Among others, Puya Meithaba observance at Wangkhei Khunou was also attended by Principal (retd) of DM College of Commerce Prof Sairem Nilabir, Principal (Retd) of Presidency College, Motbung Prof Ng Kangjia Mangang, Songlung village chief T Vumkai, K Patijang village chief Sh Lenkholun, All Manipur Muslim Pangal Women’s Organization Anwari Nurjahan, All Manipur recognized Private Schools Welfare Association advisor Namoijam Tomba, Citizens’ Club president RK Sadananda and Meelal president Moirangthem Naodalenkhomba.
