Meet Reiterates Rights Of Children

IMPHAL, Nov 9: Aimed at creating a conducive environment and space for the children, a one day consultation program on Child Trafficking in Manipur was organized by Coalition on Children’s Right to Protection, Manipur in collaboration with Social Welfare Department (SWD) at the latter’s conference hall today.

SWD Women’s Development Officer SA Shishak and chairperson of Manipur Mahila Kalyan Samiti M Purnimashi Devi were the chief guest and president respectively of the morning’ session wherein AMWJU general secretary N Phillips spoke on ‘˜the role of media in combating child trafficking in Manipur’.

In his presentation, Phillips highlighted various reports published in the local media of unscrupulous elements taking advantage of under-privileged families by exploiting their children with the pretext of good education in other States only to be used as domestic helps and in other laborious assignments/trades.

Pointing out that such a social malaise is an outcome of presence of large number of socio-economically unsound families in the State particularly in the hill and remote rural areas, the resource person stressed on sustaining coordination of all the NGOs working for safety and educational wellbeing of the children with the law enforcing agencies.

Advocate Khaidem Mani deliberated on ‘˜Law of Trafficking during the technical session which was held with Porompat police station’s Officer in-charge Inspector K Gitchandra as the moderator.

The session culminated with the unanimous observation that every citizen has to contribute towards combating the menace of child trafficking and exploitation.
