IMPHAL, Apr 28: Keeping alive the age old tradition of the Maram tribe, K Namba has been crowned the 15th king of the Maram community today. Even though monarchy has been abolished and India has gone in for democracy, the king is still a respected authority among the Maram community.

Maram Khullen village predominantly inhabited by Maram tribe is located around 5 Kms West of NH 39 along Maram-Peren road.

Whereas Christianity has taken almost all the hill people of Manipur within its fold, some Maram people are still following their indigenous faith, keeping alive their  ancient culture and tradition.

K Namba is the only son of late Maram Khullen King Karang and Queen Apei Hinga.

Following the coronation ceremony, the new king has also appointed his council of ministers. The coronation ceremony was attended by hundreds of Maram people coming from different places.

At about 11 am, the new king, clad in the royal robes came out from his residence along with his council of ministers and sat on the throne placed near the main door of his house.

Speaking at the occasion, Maram Union president RK Peter called upon the people to safeguard the indigenous culture and tradition inherited from the forefathers even though one may have adopted different religions.

He said that the Maram community should continue to respect and obey the king and his council of ministers.

The coronation ceremony was also attended by the Meitei National Front president Ch Wangambi and Manipur State Archives Director Sushila.

Later, different cultural troupes of Maram community and others presented traditional dance and music items.
