Manipuri Man Held With Forged IAF ID Card

NEW DELHI, January 26: A 26-year-old Manipuri man flashing a forged Indian Air Force identity card was arrested in Kotla Mubarakpur on Tuesday. The impostor, Sooraj Khan from Lallang in Manipur, is the self-styled commander of banned outfit, People For United Liberation Front.

He almost managed to hoodwink the police but thinking on the feet by cops prevented him from escaping. “We noticed suspicious movement by a man on a motorcycle. On being asked to show documents, he flashed an identity card of Air Force. The card had his photograph. However, policemen deputed there found that the height of the person mentioned on the card didn’t tally with the actual height of the accused,” a senior police official said.

Intelligence agencies have warned Delhi Police against possible misuse of 87 identity cards lost by Armymen in past few years. Terrorists may use these cards to enter R-Day celebrations on Wednesday, said police. A police officer said: “We have sensitized our police officers and the ushering staff of the ministry of defense about the missing ID cards. The details of army officials who lost their cards have been provided to our officers who will coordinate with liaison officers. Our officers will be deployed outside every enclosure with liaison officers.”

Army spokesperson Colonel S Om Singh said: “Officers who lose their cards register FIRs. The penalty for losing an identity card is severe as we take it very seriously.” DCP (south) H G S Dhaliwal said they are still ascertaining whether the Manipuri youth arrested was carrying one of the lost I-cards. Sooraj told police that the motorcycle he was riding was allegedly stolen from Vasant Vihar. IAF officials were informed about the identity card who declared the same as a forged one.
