Manipur Soaks In Colors Of Yaoshang

IMPHAL, Mar 21: Setting aside all uncertainties, people in Manipur began celebrating the five-day Holi, locally known as Yaoshang, on Saturday with religious fervor and massive sporting activities across the state.

Devotional songs and traditional sports make Holi in Manipur. Elders belonging to Vaishnavite sect perform Holi Eshei or devotional songs, while local clubs and NGOs organize massive Yaoshang sports at playgrounds and even roadsides in the four valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur and Thoubal. The historic Shri Shri Govindaji temple was also agog with activities with the devotional song programs organized at the temple complex. The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), an umbrella body of several news organizations of the state, has organized a sports meet at the Khuman Lampak sports complex in Imphal.

At night, young boys and girls perform Thabal Chongba (a traditional dance performed in moonlight) to the tunes of flute, saxophone and drums. People also enjoy grand feasts at every locality in the valley areas.

“We really support the community sports festival organized during Yaoshang. Sports help in diverting the youth social evils like drugs and alcoholism. Instead, it paves a new way for them to cherish the values of brotherhood and community bonds,” said Binoy Singh, an Imphal resident.

Governor Gurbachan Jagat has greeted people of the state on occasion of Yaoshang. He said, “I extend my heartiest greetings to every Manipuri on this great occasion with the hope that peace and harmony will return to the state with celebration of Holi (Yaoshang), which is a festival of love and universal brotherhood.”

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaikhangam too expressed hope that the festival would bring peace, unity, prosperity and harmony in the state. GOC of Red Shield Division, Maj. Gen DS Hooda and inspector general of Assam Rifles (South) Maj. Gen CA Krishnan also wished people on the occasion.
