Manipur Population Grows By 4 Lakhs

IMPHAL, Apr 1: The population of Manipur has rose by 4,27,850 in the last ten years as Imphal West continues to be the most populous district in the State.

This was revealed when the provisional population total of Manipur, as recorded in the census of India 2011, was formally released by the Director of Census Operations Manipur Y Thamkishore at Classic Hotel here today.

The release function was also attended by Census 2011 State Coordinator S Dinokumar and DC Imphal West K Radhakumar.

As per the provisional census record, the total population of Manipur is 27,21,756 comprising of 13,69,764 males and 13,51,992 females.

District-wise, Imphal West has the largest population of 5,14,683 with males accounting for 2,53,628 and females 2,61,055.

Total population figures for other districts are Senapati 3,54,972; Tamenglong district 1,40,143; Churachandpur district 2,71,274; Bishnupur district 2,40,363; Thoubal district 4,20,517, Imphal East district 4,52,661, Ukhrul district 1,83,125 and Chandel district 1,44,028.

The female population is higher than the male population in Imphal West, Imphal East and Thoubal districts. The number of male and female population is equal in Bishnupur district.

Director Census Operations Y Thamkishore remarked that the decadal growth rate recorded in 2011 was lower than the growth rate recorded in 2001.

However, literacy rate has risen by 10 per cent to 79.85 per cent.

The Registrar General of India included estimated population figures of Paomata, Mao-Maram and Purul sub-divisions of Senapati district in the total population of Manipur in place of the controversial figures which were found to be abnormally high.

Stating that the population figures being released was provisional, Thamkishore informed that the final figures would be released after sending the provisional figures to Guwahati for scanning.

On being asked about the controversial population figures of the three sub-divisions of Senapati district which were replaced by estimated figures, Thamkishore said that it was not the final figures.

Saying that the three sub-divisions were being represented by estimated figures at the moment, he said, “let’s see what happens in the coming days”.
