Four Manipur Militants Nabbed At Cansaulim, Goa

VASCO, Jan 19: In a major breakthrough for security agencies, four militants allegedly belonging to the banned Manipur terror outfit ‘˜Peoples United Liberation Front’ (PULF) were nabbed at Cansaulim on Wednesday.

The joint operations were carried out by Verna police along with Manipur Commando Police and the Indian Army.

The four militants, including a kingpin of PULF, who were residing on the third floor of a flat at Bazarwado-Cansaulim, were operating in the State and managing their alleged terror activities for the last three months with their counterparts in Manipur, sources told Herald.

According to Mormugao Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahesh Gaonkar, kingpin of terror outfit Samsat Khan alias Sauda (30), who is the wife of M I Khan (founder member of PULF) was operating along with other accused, Samir Khan (19), Imphal Nursafir alias Safi (30) and Ayakpam Maniram (30).

Indian Army Captain Sachin Kumar, who was accompanying the Manipur Commando Police Nula Tsunjam and Mohammed Muzamil, stated that this is a major catch since the arrest of M I Khan about six months ago in Belgaum.

‘M I Khan’s wife Sauda was operating all the terror activities from Goa. Highly placed sources in the security agency managed to crack the location of the accused and we have managed to arrest them,’ said Kumar.

‘With Sauda’s arrest, it will certainly lead to many more leads and security agencies have been working in this direction,’ added Kumar.

Intelligence Bureau officials, Goa Police, CID and Manipur Police, who interrogated all the four accused, disclosed that one of the accused had come to Goa about three months ago, while two had come during Christmas. Family members of the accused had arrived recently by train.

However, police did not disclose most details, but it is learnt that all four accused along with eight other family members were staying in a building owned by a Goan by paying Rs 6,000 down payment and monthly rent of Rs 2,500.

The accused were operating their activities with the help of seven mobile phones and one laptop, which were recovered by the police.

Gaonkar said the Eagle Force along with other police force has cordoned off the area and all accused were arrested.

It appears that the flat owner, who had rented out the premises, failed to conduct the tenant verification of the accused, who were staying in Goa for the last three months.

When asked whether Goa is turning out to be a safe haven for Naxalites and insurgents, Gaonkar remained tight-lipped and evaded a volley of questions from the media.

When asked further if the accused were operating in Goa for the last couple of months, police evaded answering the question.

Gaonkar said the accused had no motive of any terror activity in Goa, as they were only operating their terror activities from Goa with their counterparts in Manipur.

PULF, which was formed in 1992 with the motive of liberation, has diluted its motive and is involved in murders, weapon smuggling, extortion and other illegal activities and this is the only Muslim group in Manipur.

According to information available, PULF is Manipur’s only Muslim militant group and it is allegedly funded by Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agency and it functions along the Bangladesh border.
