Manipur Cops Intensify Supervisor Rescue

IMPHAL, Feb 17: Manipur police intensified their operations to rescue a supervisor of a New Delhi-based security agency that is responsible for guarding 128 mobile BTS towers of five private cell phone operators across the state.

The supervisor, Moirangthem Boboy (30), who is in charge of looking after such towers in Thoubal district, was allegedly abducted by rebels on Saturday last from the district.

His abduction came a few days after militants killed a security guard of private mobile operator Aircel in the same district in connection with a hefty monetary demand.

“We are trying our best to rescue Boboy unharmed and are carrying out rescue operations in suspected areas. Though he is from Kumbi in Bishnupur district, we are yet to ascertain from where he was abducted,” a police officer said.

Following the incident, the network of the private operator has been severely disrupted in the last couple of days. The Aircel authority is yet to make any statement on the matter. Meanwhile, three high-tech hovercrafts procured by the state to flush out rebels from Loktak Lake landed in the district on Wednesday. The government bought the three hovercrafts as militants are suspected to be taking shelter in the huts built on floating phumdis’ (thick biomass) deep inside the lake.

The hovercrafts will be part of a new police unit being raised by the Manipur government that is to be christened the Loktak Protection Force. Police officials said the hovercrafts, which can carry heavy and sophisticated weapons of different kinds, would be commissioned soon.
