Konthoujam By-Poll, MPP Decides To Back Trinamul Candidate

IMPHAL, Jan 21: The Manipur People’s Party (MPP) would not be fielding its own candidate in the by-election to Konthoujam rather it has decided to support the Trinamool Congress candidate.

A decision to this effect was adopted during a meeting of the MPP working committee held today with President Dr Nimaichand Luwang in the chair.

Meanwhile, Returning Officer of the by-election Kh Kunjabihari has issued notification for the by-poll today. According to the notification, intending candidates may file nomination papers till 3 pm of January 28.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Dr Nimaichand Luwang said that MPP would not be fielding its own candidate but will extend full support of TC Manipur candidate K Sarat.

Notably, K Sarat who contested the 9th Assembly elections in Konthoujam A/C under NPP ticket lost the election to the Congress candidate late Dr S Budhichandra by just 84 votes.

Dr Nimaichand said that Tirnamool Congress and their candidate K Sarat appealed to the MPP to support him in the upcoming by-election to Konthoujam A/C.

In addition to the appeal from the side of TC, MPP is of the opinion that all like minded political parties should work together in support of K Sarat in order to defeat the Congress candidate.

The MPP president further stated due initiatives would be taken up for to form a political alliance of non-Congress parties with a view to the next Assembly elections.

A meeting of the MPP working committee will be held on February 26 during which party’s budget for 2011-12 would be tabled, Dr Nimaichand informed.

On the other hand, a press release issued by the spokesman of TC informed that consultations with non-Congress parties to defeat the Congress candidate have been completed.

For the next Assembly elections, the party has kept its door wide open to form a pre-poll alliance, it said.

It is reported that Janata Dal (United) may extend all possible assistance if any of the like-minded parties put up their candidate in the by-election. However, JD (U) would not be putting up their own candidate.
