IMPHAL, Mar 2: The State Government has reportedly started taking up steps towards upgradation of Phungyar Assembly Constituency into a full-fledged district headquarters.

MLA of Phungyar Assembly Constituency Wungnaoshang Keishing, who is also the convener of Phungyar District Demand Committee called on Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on February 28 and submitted a memorandum in connection with the demand. During the meeting which lasted for around 1 hour, Wungnaoshang urged the Chief Minister to fulfill the demand of the people of Phungyar Assembly Constituency and upgrade it as the 10th district headquarters of Manipur.

A joint meeting held at the Babupara official residence of MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing on February 10 had adopted a unanimous resolution to press the demand for making Phungyar Assembly Constituency as the 10th district headquarters of the State after segregating from Ukhrul district headquarters.

Out of 146 villages under the four sub-divisions of Phungyar Assembly Constituency, chiefs, headmen, social workers and representatives of student bodies from 121 villages participated in the said meeting. Along with formation of Phungyar District Demand Committee, the meeting also unanimously elected MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing as the convener. Covering a total area of around 2700 square kilometer and having a total population of around 60,630, Phungyar Assembly Constituency has been divided into four sub-divisions namely Phungyar, Kamjong, Kasom Khullen and Sahamphung. All these four sub-divisions are located at a distance of around 105 to 148 kms from Ukhrul district headquarters.

In connection with his meeting with the Chief Minister, MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing informed that the Chief Minister has given positive feedback to the demand and the Chief Secretary has been entrusted for taking up necessary measures in the public interest. So, there is high hope on fulfilling the demand of the people of Phungyar Assembly Constituency.

Wungnaoshang asserted that Phungyar Assembly Constituency has been remaining backward, socially, economically, financially and educationally, as it is located far from Ukhrul district headquarters and the communication system is bad. So, the demand for upgrading the combined four sub-divisions of Phungyar Assembly Constituency into a full-fledged district headquarters has been raised in the interest of development and proper administration after due consideration various factors like geographical area, population, etc. Fulfillment of the demand would ensure not only improvement in the living condition of the people but also all round development in the field of education, health care, sanitation, and communication, the MLA asserted.
