JAC Gears Up To Resume Agitation

IMPHAL, Jan 18: The JAC Against the Killing of BSEM Chairman N Kunjabihari has geared to resume their agitation in case the Government fails to book the killers by January 21.

It is reported that major student bodies like MSF, AMSU and DESAM are set join the renewed agitation.

Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, JAC spokesman W Gonendro decried that even as the last rites of the late officer have been performed following an understanding with the Government, the Government is unable to book the murderers till date.

In case the Government fails to book the murderers by January 21, the JAC would be compelled to launch all kinds of democratic forms of agitation.

Incidentally, Asti Sanchay ceremony of the departed soul falls on January 21.

The ceremony would be marked by rally and paying of floral tributes together with students and teachers.

Saying that the false statement of Dr N Kunjabihari dying due to a BP stroke was a conspiracy,       Gonendro iterated that democratic movements like protest sittings, wearing black badges etc would be launched from January 22 if the Government fails to book the murderers by January 21.

Taking part in the press meet, AMSU HRD secretary Dipanjit Ningthoujam, MSF joint secretary Lucky Konsam and DESAM education secretary A Thoithoi pledged that they would support any movement launched by the JAC provided it would affect academic atmosphere of students.

They further informed that democratic forms of protest agitation would be launched together with students, teachers and school van/bus drivers.

Van set ablaze: One Maruti van was set ablaze by some unidentified miscreants at Ningombam Makha Maning Leikai in Imphal West district after apparently hijacking the vehicle from somewhere.

According to information culled from the spot, two unidentified youngsters who came on a Honda Activa scooter set ablaze the van (MN-04A/5158) at about 10.30 am today.  They also opened a few round of shots. Van driver Lourembam Somorjit of Khekman Wangmataba Mayai Leikai, Thoubal district said that the van was hired by the two unidentified persons from Kangla Park on the pretext of taking a patient to Serou.

While one of the youth travelled in the van, the other followed behind on the Honda Activa.    On reaching Ningombam Makha Maning Leikai, Somorjit was asked to stop the van. At this point, Somorjit thought that the patient would be boarding the van there.

But in the next moment, the driver was forced to get down from the van and they took out a bottle of petrol the Activa.  The miscreants then poured petrol over the van and set it afire.

They also opened a few round of shots as a way of intimidating the driver not to raise any alarm.

Then they hurried away from the scene towards Kodompokpi.

Later, when fire tenders arrived at the scene, the van had burnt out irretrievably.

The van belonged to one Wangjam Premananda (25) of Khekman Awang Leikai and it was bought only about a month back.

It had taken around five trips carrying passengers between Imphal and Moreh before it was burnt down today, Somorjit said.
