Ibobi’s Pet Project JNIMS Takes First Step On A Firm Footing…

Signs of things to come appear bright, session on in full swing

IMPHAL, Sep 23: Along with medical students from five major States of the country, the first semester (MBBS) of Jawaharlal Nehru institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat is underway in full swing. It is said that out of 12 seats reserved for nomination by the Central Government, 10 have already been represented with two students each from the States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar joining the first semester session covering anatomy, physiology and bio-chemistry subjects. Out of the total number of 100 seats approved by the Medical Council of India, Manipur is supposed to get 85 seats and 15 are meant for Central Government nominations.

However, Manipur is likely to gain by another two seats as only 12 students from other States have joined the session while two other candidates have opted for other medical institutions. Necessary clearance is being awaited to fill up the third vacant seat, which is also likely to be gained by the host State. Talking to the Sangai Express, JNIMS Director Prof Biren said that for the first semester in anatomy, physiology and bio-chemistry, the institute has the required faculty strength, as laid down by the MCI in its rules and regulations.

The Director also conveyed that for Anatomy and Physiology Departments, there is one Professor each, same number of Associate Professors, two Assistant Professors each and four tutors for each department. Moreover, Bio-Chemistry Department has a total of two Professors, same number of Assistant Professors and four demonstrators. Further informing that Professors are already available for the Departments of pharmacology, pathology, surgery and gynecology, Prof. Biren maintained that relevant processes had been initiated for appointment of other faculty members /staff.

He also said that within two years, the ongoing construction of a five-storey building within the JNIMS premises would be completed to accommodate offices as well as demonstration and laboratory rooms of these Depts. Disclosing that under MCI norms, JNIMS is supposed to expand in five years time, Prof Biren said that in line with this norm, the Public Works Department has already placed a detailed project report (DPR) of Rs 1270 crores estimate to the Planning Commission of India. While pointing out that against the minimal land size requirement of 25 acres prescribed by the MCI, JNIMS commands a total of 49 acres, the Director also confided that the number of beds in JNIMS Hospital would be increased to 600 from the present 350 in the next five years.

To accommodate the additional beds, construction for a 150 bed block has been started, he said while adding that taking into account technological advances in medical science 25 internet connections have been provided in the 200 seat capacity library block where 243 books are also available within the 1800 square meter structure. The Director further informed that internet facilities have been provided at both the gents and ladies’ hostels.
