House Fired Upon ‘˜With Intention To Kill’

IMPHAL, Jan 17: In an alleged attempt to eliminate family, unidentified armed persons opened several rounds of indiscriminate firing at a house in Pukhrambam under Nambol Police Station at around 8.30 pm yesterday.

In protest against the attack, local residents today staged a Wakat Meepham at Pukhrambam Market shed and demanded an explanation from all concerned.

The house which came under firing attack belongs to one Asem Chaoba Singh (60) of Pukhrambam Maning Leikai.

In connection with the incident, family members of Chaoba informed that the armed persons came asking for Chaoba at around 8.30 pm yesterday. It was also raining at that time. As none of the family members responded, armed persons started banging at the door. Not long after that they started opening several rounds of indiscriminate firing.

As the armed persons opened fire, all the family members lay prostrate on the beds to save themselves. Luckily, no one was hurt in the attack. But the bed nets, almirahs and other goods kept inside the house have been damaged beyond redemption.

The family members said that Chaoba is an elderly, ailing person and both his sons are farmers.

There is no enmity with anyone and have not received any monetary demand from UGs. Refuting any possibility of political motive behind the attack, the family members clarified that although they are supporters of former MP Th Chaoba of Nambol Assembly Constituency, but they have never been active workers in any election. The family members also appealed to all concerned for an explanation on the alleged attempt to eliminate all of them.
