Governor Inaugurates Churachandpur’s First School For Disabled

LAMKA, Feb 19:  Governor Gurbachan Jagat today inaugurated the first school for the disabled in Churachandpur district christened ‘The Malsawm Initiative’ in a simple yet emotionally pregnant function at LFS campus here alongside his better-half, Kiran Jagat.

The school, a brainchild of former journalist Pauzagin Tonsing now has fourteen differently abled children enrolled under its fold while another two are waiting for their opportunity.

Under its shed, children with different disabilities will sit in the same room, share the same table and will be guided by specially trained teachers.

‘Each child will have his or her own individual education program. He or she will be taught or trained to exploit his/her optimal potential,’ said Tonsing the founder and Secretary of TMI. Current functional test of the children were conducted by Ms Lovely Choudhury, a neuropsychologist from Guwahati who sacrificed her Bihu holidays for the occasion, he added.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor said he was deeply moved by what he saw and felt today.

‘We don’t have to have a Bill Gates or all the people in the world to help these children. Each one of us has to come forward so that this section of the society could be helped,’ he said speaking beyond his pre-drafted speech.

In fact, Jagat had spoken about three times longer than his prepared speech.  He also announced to help the Initiate with Rs. 40,000 from his discretionary fund and not less than that amount in the next fiscal year. The children of TMI have during today’s function conferred the Title ‘Pupu’ and ‘Pipi’ meaning Grandpa and Grandma to the Governor and his wife; ‘Nunu’ meaning ‘Mummy’ to DC Jacintha Lazarus and ‘Tou’ the tribal’s highest echelon to Vunglallian Tonsing and his wife.
