Congress Wins Manipur Civic Polls

IMPHAL, Jan 8: The ruling Congress won five of the eight municipal council seats and is leading in the nagar panchayats in the four valley districts of Manipur. Polling was held on January 3.

The Congress won the municipal councils of Nambol and Moirang in Bishnupur district. Independents emerged as a majority in Bishnupur and Ningthoukhong municipal councils.

The Congress won all the nine seats in Moirang. The ruling party also emerged as the single largest party in Jiribam municipal council in Imphal East, which has 10 seats. It won five seats and the winners of the remaining five seats are all Independent candidates. The Congress emerged as a majority in Thoubal municipal council and Kakching municipal council, both in Thoubal district, represented by chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh.

The Independents are a majority in the Mayang Imphal municipal council in Imphal West by winning eight out of 13 seats. The Congress won the remaining five seats.

However, the Congress did not win any nagar panchayat seats in Bishnupur district. Of the three nagar panchayats in the district, the NCP and Independents won one each. The results of the third are yet to be announced. Imphal East has two nagar panchayats.

The Congress and ruling partner CPI won four seats each out of 11 seats of the Lamlai nagar panchayat. The remaining three seats went to Manipur Peoples Party (MPP).

In Andro nagar panchayat, Congress and Independents got five seats each while CPI won one seat. In Thoubal district, results of only two panchayats have been declared.

Congress won a majority in these two nagar panchayats and is expected to put up a good performance in the other panchayats as well.
