Charges And Counter Charges Fly On Eve Of Last Day Campaign

IMPHAL, Feb 11: Even as the high-voltage election campaign for the by-election to 18-Konthoujam Assembly Constituency slated on February 14 is due to be over by 4 pm tomorrow, three active workers of the Independent candidate Kh Ranjit have been allegedly arrested and detained by some Police Commandos attacked with Lamshang Police Station.

According to workers of Independent candidate Kh Ranjit, the three active workers, two from Khumbong Bazar and the other from Khumbong Makha Leikai, have been arrested by the police commandos from their respective houses in the wee hours today on alleged charge of possession arms and  threatening the Congress workers by distributing bullets.

The workers have outrightly rejected the charges leveled against the three arrested active workers, and asserted that it was nothing but a ploy of the Congress led SPF Government to ensure the success of their candidate.

The truth is that the police commandos have launched a man-hunt of the important workers of Independent candidate Kh Ranjit and they have not been able to stay at home, the workers informed.

In connection with the arrest of the three active workers, a joint meeting of the local womenfolk was held at the residence of Kh Ranjit today and discussed the issue threadbare.

Till the time of filing this report, there is no information on the release of the three active workers.

On the other hand, the police have clarified that there is no report on the arrest of any worker.

The by-election on February 14 is to decide the fate of three candidates including Trinamool Congress candidate K Sarat, who is being backed by BJP and MPP and the Independent candidate Kh Ranjit.

Out of the total 28 polling stations of the by-election which would go to poll on February 14, 11 have been identified as hyper-sensitive, 16 as sensitive and one as critical.

As the deadline for election campaigning is drawing nearer, political parties which have a stake in the by-election have stepped up their canvassing like never before and the security measures in the entire Assembly Constituency have be tightened up.

The by-election has been necessitated following the demise of its sitting MLA Dr Sapam Budhichandra.
