MANFETE 2011 begins

IMPHAL, Mar 16: The three-day long Manfete 2011 organized by Manipur Institute of Management Studies commenced from today with the inaugural program held at Dr Kamal Indoor stadium, Manipur University in the presence of Acting Vice chancellor of the varsity Prof HNK Sarma and Director in-charge MIMS Dr Ch Ibohal Meitei as the chief guest and president respectively.

Dean of Students’ Welfare (MU) Prof Th Ratankumar and Managing Director of Babina Health Care & Hospitality Industries Pvt Ltd Dr Th Dhabali Singh also graced the event as the guests of honor.

In his address as the chief guest, Prof Sarma called upon the participants to utilize the opportunity of large gathering of students in sharing experiences and knowledge. Noting that in the first few years since Manfete began in 1995 participation was confined to students from the valley districts; he expressed satisfaction that the current event has drawn participants from the hill districts such as Churachandpur and Senapati.

On the first day of the event, spot painting, essay writing, quiz program for school and college and 120 seconds to fame competitions were held.

Churachandpur SP

IMPHAL, Mar 16: The SP of Churachandpur police has notified that all VDF candidates who have cleared the medical examination and police verification should report to the Reserve Office to the SP of CCpur on or before April 1, 2011.

The selected VDF cadres will be in service for one year.

Ukhrul mishap claims 1

IMPHAL, Mar 16: At least one member of a family was killed when a Maruti Alto car met with an accident at a spot in between New Heaven and Lambui along Imphal-Ukhrul road at around 2.30 pm today.

The deceased has been identified as Donna d/o PS Thurhring Anal of Chandel Christian village.

She was travelling in the car (MN01-W 8259) driven by one of her male relatives along with four other family members and heading towards Ukhrul when the unfortunate incident took place.

Donna died on the spot while the other occupants who sustained injuries have been admitted to Raj Polyclinic here. The condition of one of the injured is said to be critical.

The deceased young lady was originally from Chandel, but she used to frequently visit Ukhrul as one of her elder sisters is settled there, married to a Tangkhul man.

Imphal-Ukhrul road bandh

IMPHAL, Mar 16: The first day of the indefinite bandh being called along Imphal-Ukhrul road since 6 am today in protest against the killing of one Yendrembam Naoba of Khurai Kongpal Laishram Leikai passed off peacefully without any untoward incidents.

The bandh has been called by the JAC formed in protest of the killing.

On account of the bandh, vehicular traffic along Imphal-Ukhrul road remained almost nil and the Lamlong market deserted with all shops shutting down.

Police reported to firing tear gas shells to disperse bandh supporters erecting road blockade at Lamlong Bazar and Khurai Konsam Leikai area.

Valedictory function held

IMPHAL, Mar 16: The valedictory function of entrepreneurship and skill development program was held at Power Grid Corporation of Indian Ltd, Kadamtala in Jirbam today, reports our Correspondent. The program was conducted by NE Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organization Ltd (NEITCO) Guwahati and sponsored by PGCI under its Corporate Social Responsibility Scheme. The chief guest of the function GR Sharma, Chief Manager of PGCI distributed toll kits and certificates to the trainees.

DCDA demands SDO/BDO

TAMENGLONG, Mar 16: The District concern Development Association (DCDA), Tamenglong has drawn attention of the SDO/BDO concerned for submission of VDC formation letters to the Chairman DRDA for onward perusal within March 20, reports our Correspondent.

If any SDO/BDO fails to submit the said letters within the specified date, the Association said it will be constrained to initiate due course of action as further delay in processing the matter would result in lapsing of the fund.

In this connection, the DRDA Chairman has also issued letters to all the SDO/BDO concerned.

Schemes devolved

IMPHAL, Mar 16: The State Government has devolved the implementation of the Border Area Development Program (BA- DP) and Integrated Watershed Development Program (IWDP)/Integrated Watershed Management Program (IWMP) to the District Councils/DRDAs in the hill districts and to the Zilla Parishads/DRDAs in the valley areas with immediate effect and until further orders.

RIMS standoff

IMPHAL, Mar 16: RIMS Superintendent Dr Y Mohen filed a contempt case against RIMS authority for issuing order to him to demit the office of Medical Superintendant with effect from March 1 last and reverting him back to the post of Professor of Pathology.

The contempt case was filed with reference to an interim order of Gauhati High Court passed on December 14 last year.

A Bench of Gauhati High Court passed an order to issue calling upon the respondents to show cause as to why contempt proceeding should not be initiated against them.

Sit-in-protest staged

IMPHAL, Mar 16: A sit-in-protest was staged against the grenade attack on the residence of Ngangom Mangi of Sega Road Khwairakpam Leikai. An unknown youth exploded the bomb in the evening of March 14. According to family members, no group made any monetary demand to the family. Womenfolk who were taking part in the sit-in-protest demanded the concerned not to repeat the same in future.

Body formed at Jiribam

IMPHAL, Mar 16: An organization christened Jiribam Municipal Council Ward Development Committee Members Association has been formed today, reports our Correspondent.

HSSLC exam: 303 candidates appeared in the HSSLC examinations conducted by CoHSEM at Jiribam Higher Secondary School. One candidate was expelled for impersonation.

Traffic restrictions

IMPHAL, Mar 16: In view of the forthcoming Yaoshang (Holi) festival certain restrictions with regard to driving of motor vehicles have been announced by the police department along with a strong warning that stringent punitive action (imprisonment), including monetary penalty would be initiated against those violating rules of motor Vehicles Acts 1988.

According to a statement issued by SSP (IW) L Kailun driving without valid driving license, driving by minors, driving without registration numbers, triple riding, exceeding speed limit, driving in inebriated condition, using mobile phones while driving, etc would be liable for punishment.

Union urges general public

IMPHAL, Mar 16: The Manipur Electricity Employees’ Union has urged the general public to co-operate with the Electricity Department in conserving power.

The union in a press release appealed the power consumers to put the electrical items and appliances switch off when not in use.

Maintaining that the ongoing drive has been initiated for the welfare of the general public, the union urged all to extend co-operation in the drive.

Informing that around Rs 15,45,93,120 have been collected so far from the ongoing drive, the union said that 242 persons have been detained for illegal connection and 13675 lines have been disconnected.

56 defaulters have also been given the chance of reconnection, it added.

Consequently, 6-7 MW of power can be conserved daily after the drive was started on January 28 last, the press release added.

AMWJU withdraws boycott

IMPHAL, Mar 16: Following revocation of FIR case filed against Editor of Sanaleibak daily and Spokesperson of AMWJU, A Mobi by Imphal police station, All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) has fully withdrawn its agitation of non publication of news relating to the State Government. It was resolved in a Standing Committee meeting of the scribes’ body held at Manipur Press Club today.

The meeting also decided not to entertain the claims and objections regarding draft list of members if these are not claimed within March 25. The final list of members would be published on March 28.

The meeting also resolved to inform the media organizations to nominate two runners each from morning dailies, one runner each from eveningers and two runners from ISTV News for participation in the torch rally for AMWJU Annual Sports Meet commencing March 18.
