Meitram protests

IMPHAL, Mar 13: A protest demonstration was staged today at Meitram Awang Leikai playground against any design of the Government to take over the playground to provide alternative plots to families affected by the Imphal airport expansion project.

Any step to acquire the playground which has produced even national players would be challenged with stiff opposition even to the extent of taking the matter to the Court and boycotting the forthcoming Assembly elections.

The protesters put up placards which read as, “Don’t try to take over our playground with force”, “Sports earn fame for Manipur”, “Don’t try to suppress sports persons”, “Playground cannot be converted into residential complex” etc.

Meet concludes

IMPHAL, Mar 13: The sports meet of Educational Student’s Guaranteed School has concluded at Makeng Dolaithabi today.

The meet was kick started on March 9.

Speaking as chief guest in the closing function, Makeng Dolaithabi Zilla Parishad Member W Kumar said that the meet was organised with an aim to encourage the budding players to take part in higher levels of sporting competitions.

Makeng Dolaithabi Gram Panchayat Pradhan Th Itopishak Devi and Village Education Committee Secretary W Nimai Singh were the president and guest of honor of the function respectively.

One found dead

IMPHAL, Mar 13: A 45 year old man was found hung to dead inside a house at Keithelmanbi this morning. The deceased has been identified as Thokchom Chaotombi (45) of Kamong but staying at Keithelmanbi. It is said that Chaotombi ran a shop at Keithelmanbi.

Zeliangrong Boudi warns

IMPHAL, Mar 13: Irked with the erratic power supply in Tamenglong district, Zeliangrong Boudi has warned the State Government that it will launch mass agitation including shut down of power station at Rengpang if regular power supply is not restored in the district at the earliest.

A press release issued by its Chairman Thomas Kamei said that the power situation had worsened ever since 133/33 KV sub-station was inaugurated by Chief Minister O Ibobi at Rengpang.

With the HSLC and HSSLC examinations are knocking at the door, the press release added, parents have to shell out a huge amount of money in the purchase of candles and kerosene for their children.

Training programmes

IMPHAL, Mar 13: Joint Director (Vety), Senapati district, Dr Y Rajendra Singh will organize two batches of five days farmers’ training program on piggery and poultry farming for the year 2010-11 at Khabung Karong and Taphou Pudunamei villages from March 15  and 16 respectively.

IMPHAL, Mar 13: Indian Dental Association, Manipur State branch in association with Toubul Youth Development Association organized a free medical camp at Toubul Government Junior High School today.

Around 400 people were provided free dental check-up facility and medicines in the camp.

Speaking at the occasion, MLA I Ibohalbi said that people in rural areas are not able to give proper dental care.

So everybody must understand the importance of dental care to lead a healthy life, he added.

Mishap kills one

IMPHAL, Mar 13: A 49 year old man died after he was knocked down by a truck at about 11.20 am at Charhajar along Imphal-Dimapur road under Sapermeina police station.

The deceased has been identified as one Chandra Prasad of Turibari. He was working at Kangpokpi Veterinary Hospital.

The corpse has been deposited at RIMS mortuary.

The truck involved in the incident has been seized by police along with the driver.

Village Authority decries arrest

IMPHAL, Mar 13: Vangai Chungpa Village Autthority of Tousem Sub-division has decried the arrest of Satkhogin Chongloi by 22 AR personnel, reports our Correspondent.

Chairman of the VA, Paosat Chongloi said that Satkhogin is the secretary of the village authority and does not have any nexus with the UGs. The chairman said that Satkhogin was arrested from Hailakandi district of Assam when he went to meet his relatives and not from Phaitol.

Non-journalists union

IMPHAL, Mar 13: All Manipur Non-Journalists Employees’ Union appointed its office bearers and executive members in a general body meeting held at Manipur Press Club today.

The meeting dissolved its adhoc committee and appointed Maibam Sobhachandra of Ireibak, Mayengbam Jayenta of The Sangai Express and Yumnam Roshnikanta of Naharolgi Thoudang as President, General Secretary and Finance Secretary respectively.

Yengkhom Inaobi of Poknapham, Ahongshangbam Lukhoi of Imphal Free Press, Laishram Somorjit of Hueiyen Lanpao and Leimapokpam Tomba of The Sangai Express has been also appointed as Vice-president, Joint Secretary, Publicity Secretary and Assistant Publicity Secretary respectively.
