Youth waiting for surrender dies

IMPHAL, Apr 29: An 18 year old youth who was handed over to the Army to surrender died under mysterious circum- stances.

Salam Sanjoy alias Bono (18) s/o Kamini of Tera Moirang Hanuba Leirak under Lamphel police station Imphal West district was handed over to 12th Maratha Light Infantry attached to Patsoi police station by some women including his mother Sushila this morning.

Bono collapsed inside the 12th MLI post and he succumbed on the way to RIMS. Contending that Bono died due to torture inside the army camp, a large number of people belonging to Tera Moirang Hanuba Leirak vandalized the house of one Ningthoujam (N) Kabita Devi located at Takyel Kolom Leikai.

The family members and the local people alleged that Bono was handed over to army at the insistence of Kabita Devi. The crowd was however put under control by a team of Imphal West District Police.  SDPO N Madhunimai also came to the spot. On the other hand, a police source informed that around 40 SP capsules and four N-10 tablets were recovered from the possession of Bono. There was no injury marks on his body. Yet, police have not yet claimed that Bono died due to drug overdose. Bono was earlier arrested by police for having nexus with a UG group. Later in the evening a public meeting was held at Moirang Hanuba Leirak Machin with MLA S Kunjakishore even as police have been keeping a tight vigil in the area to avert any untoward incident.

Ibobi appeals

IMPHAL, Apr 29: Stating that the practice of selling/hawking things by occupying road sides, footpaths and bridges is unseen in other States of India, Chief Minister O Ibobi has appealed to all street vendors to move to Lamphel Super market where the Govt has allocated space for them.

Speaking at a special training program about flagship programs of UPA and SPF Govts organized by Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee at Congress Bhavan here today; Ibobi stated that it would be unmanageable for the Govt if vendors from all districts of the State would sell their wares in and Khwairamband Keithel only. Occupying road sides, footpaths and bridges would create many problems in view of the ever rising number of commuters and vehicles.

If the people agree on removing Kangjeibung and the Sahid Minar, the Govt can make arrangements for the street vendors inside Khwairamband Keithel. But this would be impossible, Ibobi stated while appealing to the street vendors to accept the Govt’s plan of allocating space at Lamphel Super Market. Once the vendors start business there, customers would certainly come there to buy things.
