IMPHAL, Jan 27: Reacting to the news report ‘˜Doubts galore over quality of packaged water in Manipur: Norms, standards by-passed blatantly’ published on the January 26 edition of this paper, proprietors of four packaged drinking water manufacturing units have clarified that all the units engaged in manufacturing of packaged drinking water in Manipur are duly approved by BIS (ISI Mark) and the laboratories are also maintained as per BIS norms.

The news report was not intended to affect the interest of any packaged drinking water manufacturing units in Manipur, but to highlight the fact that even though there is strong suspicion that sub-standard packaged drinking water among the various brands have flooded the market today, the Food Health Authority, which is supposed to handle the matter, has not been able to perform its duties properly.

Moreover, Food Health Authority is the sole authority in Manipur with regard to verification on whether any of the packaged drinking water available in the market of Manipur is sub-standard or not and there is no other authority in the State.

In a joint statement, proprietors of Silver Dew (Loktak Industries), Uni and Fresh (Markande Beverages), Aqua Dew (Naorem Industries) and Magic Dew (Good Health) asserted that BIS is the sole authority for issuing the ISI certificates and BIS carries out periodical check up of the laboratories and quality of the water.

It is mandatory to get the water sample tested every month through BIS approved laboratories outside the State, the joint statement said.

The same issue had reached the floor of the Assembly some years back and it then decided that the samples would be sent to Guwahati for testing, but after this, no one seems to know what has happened, with even the media failing to follow up on the story.

Packaged and bottled water has come as a big relief to   the people, especially train travelers who have to cover long distances.

Train passengers now no longer have to wait for the next station to fill up their empty canteens and this also means that the passengers at least have the luxury of choosing the packaged water when they want to clean and freshen up, especially  in the morning.
