BJP Rolls Up Sleeves For Civic Polls

IMPHAL, Mar 3: State unit BJP has started charting out its political strategies to fight in the elections to Imphal Municipal Council, which is due to be held sometime in April or May, and included in its strategy is to seek the help of Right to Information Act.

After keeping Imphal Municipal Council under suspension for 6 months, the State Government has started taking up steps to hold the election to reconstitute Imphal Municipal Council.

However the State unit BJP has charged that Imphal Municipal Council has been placed under suspension at the behest of the ruling Congress party so that the Ministers and MLAs can misuse the large amount of fund provided for development of Imphal city under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission.

In connection with the upcoming elections to Imphal Municipal Council, a joint meeting of all the BJP workers belonging to the seven Assembly segments falling within the jurisdiction of Imphal Municipality was held yesterday and a decision to contest in the election from all the 27 wards of the Council was taken.

Furthermore, the meeting decided to take the help of Right to Information Act to ascertain whether the sitting MLAs in all the seven Assembly segments have judiciously utilized their respective Local Area Development Fund and the PDS items made available to the people in all the wards.

Just as the ruling Congress party was defeated in the recent by-election to Konthoujam AC with the help of RTI Act, the meeting resolved that similar political strategies should be adopted to defeat Congress in the elections to IMC as well.

As a step towards implementation of the resolutions adopted during the meeting yesterday, BJP State unit is all set for launching a mass awareness program for one week starting from March 25 to highlight the misdoings of ruling Congress party. State BJP unit has also reportedly taken up steps to form alliance with other like-minded parties in some wards where the foothold of the party is not strong enough with the main objective of defeating the Congress party.
