IMPHAL, Sep 16: In line with the purpose of their visit and to get a feel of the real state at the ground level, Ambassadors of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be proceeding to Moreh by road.

The Ambassadors who are studying the feasibility of opening trade and commerce between ASEAN countries and India through Moreh insisted on visiting Moreh in spite of the State Government’s offer of a helicopter to take them to the border town. The ASEAN Ambassadors will be arriving on September 19.

The ASEAN Ambassadors’ scheduled visit to Manipur for three days is being sponsored by Do-NER Ministry with a view to give a more concrete shape to the Government of India‘s Look East Policy.

Malaysian Ambassador Dato Tan Seng Sung is the team leader of the ASEAN Ambassadors.

The team includes Ambassadors of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia.

During their three day visit to Manipur which includes a trip to Moreh, the team will collect a firsthand account on the feasibility or infeasibility of opening trade and commerce between India and ASEAN countries through Moreh.

The foreign diplomats would also study the trade infrastructure available in Manipur, informed an official source.

The diplomats accompanied by officials of DoNER Ministry will hold a meeting with the Chief Minister and State Government officials on September 19. They will proceed to Moreh by road the next day.

On the other hand, the State Government has taken up stringent security measures in view of the Ambassadors’ scheduled visit to Moreh. Moreover, Works Dept has been entrusted the responsibility of improving the road.

In connection with the foreign diplomats’ sojourn in the State, an official meeting was held today with the Chief Secretary in the chair.
