Arunachal Fights Back Against Apple’s China Appeasement

The iPhone 4 was recently released in China, and by the looks of it, Apple is stepping on sensitive lines to appease their yellow- buyers. Apparently, the Cupertino-based company has gifted the disputed Indian state to the most-populated country, and the inhabitants are not too pleased at this transgression.

The iPhone 4 was recently released in China, within 4 days of which a record 100,000 sales were made and another 100,000 had been ordered. And seemingly enough, for a reason: Apple followed China’s directive and showed the entire state within China borders in the phone’s maps.

The built-in Maps App is hard-wired to Google Maps‘ censored dataset for China, which follows the official propaganda of that country’s government. Arunachal Pradesh is currently administered by India.

The state of Arunachal Pradesh has moved the Central Government against Apple’s iPhone 4 maps. Takam Sanjay, Congress MP in the Lok Sabha from the disputed state says, ‘This is yet another attempt at painting a wrong picture on the territorial integrity of Arunachal Pradesh and we strongly protest this nefarious design. We want Apple to immediately rectify the fault and ensure that Arunachal Pradesh is shown as very much part of India.’

Others have made this mistake in the past as well. Google showed the state as a part of China twice in the past two years. Since then, the site has rectified the error and issued an apology after Sanjay took up the matter with the search engine. But the MP is not satisfied. He says:

‘The question is not about just an apology when everybody knows Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India. I think this is nothing but a conspiracy and an appeasement policy by all these international technology giants, including the search engine Google.‘

The border dispute originated from an agreement, which the British rulers made with the Tibetan and Chinese governments in the year 1914, that sets the McMahon Line aka the Line of Actual Control (LAC) as the Sino-Indian border along the 1,030 km stretch that the North-Eastern state shares with China. China never recognized the boundary, and India got handed down with the dispute post-independence, after which the two countries fought a border war in 1962 when Chinese troops tried to take over the state. A similar situation was repeated in 1986.

The Chinese are also accused of occupying 8,000 sq km of the already much-in-trouble Jammu and Kashmir.
