UKHRUL, Feb 13: With the opening of branches of different banks with ATM booths in the offing, banking facility in Ukhrul district is likely to take a new turn in the coming days.

The long cherished dream of Ukhrul denizens of having an ATM facility will come into reality on February 15 as State Bank of India (SBI) is set to open a branch with ATM booth at Somsai, Ukhrul.

According to sources from the office of the district administration, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officials have visited the site and reportedly given its final approval of opening the currency chest.

SBI started functioning at Somsai on February 3 last.

In the meantime, another source said that Punjab National Bank would also open a branch in Ukhrul with the probable site at Mini Secretariat complex.

It added that the process is however delayed which according to the bank is due to shortage of manpower in the North East sector.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, Ashok Kumar expressed appreciation for the efforts of 10 Sector Assam Rifles and 17 Assam Rifles for providing infrastructural support to the project.

The DC added that steps have been initiated to bring more bank branches to serve the people in the district in coming years.

Axis bank has been invited to open a branch in Ukhrul.

It is pertinent to mention that the lone banking facility in the district, United Bank of India, Ukhrul branch, is not able to effectively serve the population of over 1, 55,795 of the district. Sources informed that the Mini Secretariat building is also likely to be inaugurated in the last week of February by Union Home Minister Chidambaram.
