Teaching troubles

Recent developments have demonstrated that all is not well within the campus of the Manipur University, the only highest seat learning in Manipur. First the entire teaching community was up in arms against the present Vive Chancellor Prof. H Tombi Singh, alleging that the university was making a nosedive in all fronts under his administration.

The teachers went on cease work strike disrupting normal classes for many days, saying they would not call off the agitation until and unless the VC had been removed. The teachers finally relented when the Governor Ved Marwah assured that an inquiry would be instituted to look into the charges leveled against the VC by the teaching community.

The probe panel was supposed to submit its report to the authority within one month of its constitution. Now after several months there is no report of the committee submitting its report to the authority. Even if the findings are already handed over to the authority concerned it is kept in secret. It is strange that the teachers are saying little about the inquiry now.

Given the rhetoric and stand taken by them during the cease-work strike they should have mounted more pressure on the authority to complete the inquiry, implement the recommendations and take actions to set things right. The silence being maintain by the university teaching community over the whole issue now is deafening. Another disturbing development is the scandal involving tampering of marks and irregularities in admission.

The crime committed by the officials or teachers, whoever is involved, is a very serious business. The fact that an underground organization had to intervene into the scandal speaks volumes of the decay in the university. The mark tampering may not be the only isolated case. There could have been more irregularities.

As if these are not enough there now comes the report that a number of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students may not be getting post matric scholarships, thanks to delay in announcing results of the examinations taken by the university. According to a source, even though the deadline for submission of the forms is fixed on January 10 students in State institutions could not submit them as mark sheets are yet to be issued by the university. If the students are deprived of the scholarship, this will be great injustice to the students. It would seem that while the officials have no time to prepare the mark sheets they have enough time to issue tampered mark sheets.

Now that an inquiry has been instituted to pull up all the guilty persons in the present scandal rocking the university persons in the present scandal rocking the university, it is hoped that it will complete within the stipulated time and heads of all the guilty persons would be rolled. This will be the only one step towards cleansing the institution of learning. A lot needs to be done to finish the job.
